Yesterday, the National Gender Service (NGS) announced that it will be closing its waiting list to new referrals. This closure, with over 2,400 people waiting to access the service, is an admission of the failure of the service to meet the needs of our community. Our joint statement urges the Department of Health and the HSE to address our healthcare needs.

Trans Healthcare Action fully supports the motion put forth today by Labour re: Trans Healthcare. The motion notes the ongoing struggle that trans people are all too familiar with: a ballooning waiting list of 13+ years, invasive and distressing assessments, and how we have been let down by hollow government promises.

The recent judgment comes as a heavy blow to the trans community. We at THA deeply empathise with our neighbours in the UK. We disagree with the UK Supreme Court’s interpretation that “biological sex” is binary and determined at birth. Here in Ireland, our community needs to take this as a reminder that while progress can be won, it can also be lost. Stay connected and stay safe. Our lives are ours to decide!

We reiterate our call for the HSE to reassess its approach to hiring and include the TGD community in decision-making.

We believe media coverage of healthcare issues related to the trans community must centre the voices and experiences of trans people.

We call upon the HSE to implement a rights-based approach to trans healthcare adhering to international best practice and co-production.
